SE Materials Checking Course

  • Peter Jan de Vries

I really enjoy taking Wycliffe’s online course, “Scripture Engagement Materials Checking.” I’m doing this together with a group of Wycliffe colleagues from different parts of the world. For example we are asked to test an animated video about the life of Jesus. The main question is: How suitable is this video for a specific language group in Africa? A lot of questions come to mind that we could ask the people. For example:
The narrator of the story is a woman. What do people think of that?
What do people think of the background music?
What do people think of the clothing (style, color, etc.) the people wear?

Is the way men and women interact culturally acceptable?

What do they think of how Jesus is portrayed and how He acts?

Why all these questions? Every language and culture has its own unique perspective on the world and on life, and in translation work, the goal is to communicate God’s message as clearly as possible. With as few distractions as possible. In this course, we learn how to evaluate Scripture products as best we can, with the aim of making the Biblical message as accessible as possible.
After successfully completing this course, I am now certified as a “SE Materials Checker.” I hope to apply this knowledge within the SIL LEAD Global team that I'm part of, and for the translation projects in Indonesia. The Faith and Farming workshop modules are an example of this type of product.
