Translating 'The Life of Christ'
Suddenly Barnabas is in tears and he says, “Regularly I tell them the Bible stories, but they don't want to listen and remain indifferent." His tears surprise me because it is rare to see a Korowai man cry. That doesn't fit in their culture. But I can sympathize with him because I've had similar experiences.
Last year, I checked the Bible book of Genesis in Korowai with Barnabas. Afterwards I gave him Korowai audio recordings and picture booklets to pass on the Bible stories in his own village, Mangge. He has done this with enthusiasm but it clearly saddens him that his own people are not open to it.

After the teachers training course, I work with Barnabas on finishing the preparatory recordings for “The Living Christ” booklet (Gospel Recordings). We started these in 2022 but didn't get it finished. These preparatory recordings are important because they serve as the basis for more professional recordings. During these preliminary recordings we go deeper into Biblical key terms, cultural differences and other questions. The better the quality of the pre-recordings, the easier it'll be to make the professional recordings and the better the quality. |
After these recordings, Damusi and I take Barnabas back to Mangge by boat and then we travel on to Yaniruma. The next day we pass Mangge again and Barnabas, along with some other people from Mangge, is waiting for us on the riverbank. They want to buy the Gospel of Mark booklet and memory cards with Korowai Bible stories.
